Island Hopping
Island hopping is the name given to the action in which the allied powers would "jump" from Japanese controlled island to Japanese controlled island during the Pacific war. The superior allied forces would invade Japanese beaches with superior numbers and force the Japanese back. The island would be taken eventually becuase the defenders would normally not have any reinforcements, and the superior numbered allies would simply overrun the Japanese forces.
Most of the time the Japanese commanders would convince the civialians to pick up arms and fight the Americans, or convince them to commit suicide. In many cases the Japanese would only have surviviors because they were unable to continue fighting or commit suicide. In many islands the surviving civilians would number less 1,000 people.
The Japanese had to give up all islands and all land taken during WWII after they lost the war. The Allied Powers didn't have to take every island becuase once Japan surrendered(becuase of the Atomic Bomb) all their stolen land was at once given back to its previous owner, and most, or all, of the Japanese troops were removed from the land.
